Humidifying mist technology, developed by Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science®, is the technology of varying the water droplet size and propulsion speed and the aggregate droplet configuration and density, depending on what is being misted (eyes, skin, lacerations, breathing passages) and depending on the intended purpose (humidifying, washing, sterilizing). An understanding of mist-dosing technology at the microscopic level is the basis for all present and future Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® devices that are personal, portable and hand-held. These portable humidifiers apply Trade Secret tissue culture grade pure water to eyes or skin to replenish water vapor lost to evaporation.

The micron-liter, a measure of liquid volume, represents one-millionth of a liter. Micron-liters are used to measure either droplet volume or the water volume contained in a given amount of mist emitted from a humidifier.

Conventional eye drops deliver about 20 to 25 micron-liters of fluid to the eye’s tear film. Because this amount is greater than the volume of the tear film, these drops have the disadvantage of flooding the eye, which washes away the tear film and replaces it with the fluid that makes up the drops.

With Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science®’s patented micron-size mist, the quantity of fluid that is administered to the eye surface is less about two times the volume of the normal aqueous layer of the tear film, that is, less than 10 micro-liters. Preferably, between 0.5 and 6 micron-liters is administered.

According to Dr. William Mathers, M.D., the water mist approach retains the simplicity of water but overcomes the potential for severe osmotic shock by diluting the tear volume with exquisitely small micro-droplets. When these micro-droplets land on the ocular surface, they pass directly through the outer lipid layer and dilute the water layer without washing away the normal tear constituents. The canister nozzle delivers 1 to 2 micro-liters per square centimeter per second at 14 inches from the face. Since the average exposed ocular surface is 2 cm2 this results in 2 micro-liters per second to the eye. Therefore, in one to two seconds, the tear volume is diluted sufficiently to restore normal osmolarity.

“I knew from the start that the application with mist would allow for a titration that you couldn’t achieve with a drop,” Dr. Mathers said (Titration refers to the application of medication in extremely small or microscopic doses).” … “The mist allows you to put 1 micro-liter into the tear film so that you get no osmotic shock. It is a very gentle process and it allows the patient to tolerate pure water with no discomfort.”
