Sharon Kleyne Blows The Whistle On India’s Uranium-Tainted Aquifers

India Aquifers Are Being Poisoned By Uranium Says Sharon Kleyne. Contaminated India Aquifers Threaten Millions of Lives throughout India.

Nature’s Pharma®/Water Life Science® creator and educator, Sharon Kleyne, sounds the alert, especially for those who are thinking of visiting India soon. Kleyne shares that a new study discovered rampant uranium contamination in drinking water drawn from aquifers. This is not just an isolated problem, say like the lead issue in Flint, Michigan. No, this aquifer contamination in India affects 16 states! Kleyne says that researchers pin the blame on over-drainage of these water-bearing bodies.

The research team from Duke University of the U.S. found that nearly a third of water wells tested in the state of Rajasthan, for instance, contained uranium levels exceeding the World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s safe drinking water standards. Kleyne points out that earlier water quality studies revealed similar uranium-poisoned aquifers in 26 districts in northwestern India and 9 districts in southern and southwestern India.

Kleyne’s alarm is shared by physicians, scientists and researcher around the world. “Uranium exposure causes many serious health complications,” says Kleyne, “including life-threatening kidney disease.” Avner Vengosh, professor of geochemistry and water quality at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and the co-author of the study’s findings, says that “developing effective remediation technologies and preventive management practices should be a priority.”

Kleyne, host of the educational, nationally syndicated radio program, The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water®, Nature’sPharma®Water Life Science® on VoiceAmerica and World Talk Radio sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, consistently urges more water education and more financial support for water research before a bad global water situation becomes disastrous. “We have to learn how to live with Earth, which is a living organism,” says Kleyne. “Water is also a living organism and contains the secret of life itself. We must get smarter faster about the water we need to survive as a species.”

Vengosh vigorously agrees. “One of the takeaways of this study is that human activities can make a bad situation worse (poorly managed crop irrigation), but we could also make it better. Including a uranium standard,” Vengosh continues, “in the Bureau of Indian Standards’ Drinking Water Specification based on uranium’s kidney-harming effects, establishing monitoring systems to identify at-risk areas, and exploring new ways to prevent or treat uranium contamination will help ensure access to safe drinking water for tens of millions in India.”

“The fact is,” Kleyne adds, “is that India’s aquifers are quickly drying out. Something must be done, and done now, to reverse this tragic situation.” Water is the breath of life.
