Water Advocate Kleyne Tells the Truth about Chapped Lips. Sharon Kleyne Brings Relief for Sufferers of Chapped Lips.
Unlike many serious diseases and afflictions, chapped lips will not usually threaten your life or drive you into the hospital. But there is no denying the fact that chapped lips can be painful, annoying, unattractive, uncomfortable and difficult to ignore. As the weather turns cooler and winter fast approaches, you know that it’s likely you’ll experience some cracked, dry and even bleeding lips before summer comes again.
International water educator and researcher Sharon Kleyne is well aware of this cycle and she has some advice that will soothe your lips and ease your mind. Kleyne, host of the nationally syndicated The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, Global Climate Change and Your Health on VoiceAmerica sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, wants to reassure you that paraffin-based lip balm can help immeasurably to soothe and heal chapped lips. However, balm will only work if you apply it correctly. Kleyne recently reported on the causes of chapped lips and the proper application of lip balm.
Chapped lips, or cheilitis, occur because the skin of the lips experiences excessive evaporation. This evaporation might be accompanied by inflammation, peeling and cracking. As stated earlier, chapped lips are most likely to occur in winter when the cooler air is not able to hold as much natural water vapor. The forced air heating and cooling in an automobile, blowing directly at the face also causes frequent chapping. Other high risk conditions include exposure to wind, sun and dust, and airline cabins where the relative humidity may only be 3 to 5%.
Because the skin of the lips are thinner than body skin, and contain no sweat glands, hair follicles or moisture sealing oils, Kleyne explains, lip skin tends to become dehydrated much more quickly than body skin. If you want to prevent chapped lips, drink at least eight glasses of water a day, in addition to all other liquids, and avoiding prolonged exposure to lip-drying situations. Also, do not lick chapped lips!
But what do you do when chapped lips occur despite your best efforts? Fortunately, there are numerous remedies and products on the market. Most contain an oil-or-wax-based moisture sealer, plus an additive such as menthol to soothe and cool. Some may contain an anti-inflammatory or anti-bacterial medication. Lip balm or petroleum jelly, says Kleyne, can be helpful but only if used correctly. Above all, Kleyne points out, remember that lip balm is a moisture sealer only. It holds water content in, yet it does not supplement or replenish water lost by the lip skin. Kleyne recommends replenishing the lip skin’s natural water content before applying lip balm so the moisture sealer has something to seal. Kleyne suggests using a personal, portable hand-held skin or eye humidifier that emits a 100% fresh water mist. The ideal water would have a 5.5 to 6.5. pH that is compatible with human skin. Most tap water is not skin-compatible and will not be beneficially absorbed.
